THEY are the tiny islands that have literally disappeared.

Five islands in the Pacific Ocean existed as late as 2014; fast forward two years and they are nowhere to be seen.

A further six reef islands are also facing the same fate, in a disturbing warning to the world’s scientists and other low-lying nations.

An alarming new study, published in Environmental Research Letters, reveals rising sea levels and coastal erosion are to blame for the predicament.

Scientists warn the findings could provide valuable insights for future research.

“At least 11 islands across the northern Solomon Islands have either totally disappeared over recent decades or are currently experiencing severe erosion,” the study confirms.

“Shoreline recession at two sites has destroyed villages that have existed since at least 1935, leading to community relocations.”

Study lead author Simon Albert said one island had lost 10 houses to the sea between 2011 and 2014.

Dr Albert, a senior research fellow at the University of Queensland, said the Solomons was considered a sea-level hotspot because rises there are almost three times higher than the global average.

According to the study, the five that had vanished were all vegetated reef islands up to five hectares (12 acres) that were occasionally used by fishermen but not populated.

“They were not just little sand islands,” Dr Albert said.

It is feared that the rise in sea levels will cause widespread erosion and inundation of low-lying atolls in the Pacific.

SMH...for those 'GLOBAL WARMING DENIERS' and the obvious impact that the ocean levels are having on all of those areas --- it's not going to work for humanity to keep their head shoved up their collective arse and pretend that this isn't a growing problem.

Along our coastal areas - especially in the Gulf Coast - New Orleans; that sets below the sea level...there's just so much FEMA dollars and value that can be pumped into keeping and maintaining what mother nature is going to reclaim after a couple of well placed hurricanes.  And that is an event that will assuredly happen!  And at what cost to human/livestock/commercial property do we say --- enough; vacate this area and leave it as a 'mandatory set back' that can't be inhabited - period?

Crying or Very sad

A FEW of the low-lying Pacific Islands have always been first in line to eventually disappear, once the water creeps up high enough...

BASICALLY because they are already so low-lying that on average they are below sea level (imagine a saucer/dished shape -- where the outer rim keeps the aeas at bay); and regularly flood during storm (cyclone) season..

THEY WERE  always fated to disappear in a few thousands years, as it was.  What current climate change conditions are doing, is greatly accelerating events -- to such an extent, that what might have taken a few centuries, is now expected to occur over the next 2->3 decades !

SOME of the better off Island nations (like Fiji, as one example..) have already started buying farmland at higher elevations in other countries, in preparation to move their farmers when their existing farms become permanently flooded..

TO KEEP THINGS in perspective, it needs to be remembered that we're only talking about sea rises measured in centrimetres to cause these kinds of disruptions -- not feet...
WHAT WILL be causing even greater levels of catastrophic destruction is the increasing winter storm surges across the Pacific and Indian Oceans over the rest of this century, over and above just a few inches higher water levels..

Plans are also in place to move the inhabitants of some Pacific nations to islands off NZ; while areas around central and Far North Queensland, and islands off Australia have been identified as suitable relocation points -- though the Oz guvm'nt is lagging behind NZ on the planning front.

WHAT SOME people have to keep in mind is the kind of conditions and climates enjoyed by many Pacific Islanders -- some countries may say "We must do more more !" -- but really, could you imagine relocating Pacific Islanders to Canada, Eastern Russia or Greenland, or the Aussie outback -- much fairer by half, to try and replicate/slightly better their home conditions ?

AS IT IS the "First World" industrialisation that has created the problems (and amplified and multiplied by current rates of development growth in China and India..), isn't it only the least that should be done, that those Islanders needing new homes in the foreseeable future be relocated to similar environments that they are losing ?             Smile

Funny how we never hear from the vehement denialists on these threads -- when there's actual, tangible proof of what global warming is doing ...

You do know that these islands and surrounding area are always changing due to the constant local extreme geological/volcanic/tectonic activity, and often 'rise abd fall' don't you...?

And that these "sinking" islands are the ones most exposed to the sea waves?

Cool

THE ONLY REASON things have "gone...quiet" is because Tommy Monk keeps on repeating the same old lies over, and over, and over again...
Totally ignoring others comments..

TOMMY always has his own definitions for words he uses, you notice ==  any lies and fairytales he spouts must be accepted as the "TRUTH"  !
Tommy Monk claims to speak the "TRUTH" but has only managed to espouse a load of fallacious guff..

THE IGNORANT little weasel-mouthed grub that then goes on to to boldly claim that nobody has proven him wrong !?!

THAT'S DESPITE the obvious and quite blatant minor little fact that Victor, Ben, veya,  and my most humble self, have continually proven the little Monk to not only be plainly wrong over these last couple of weeks,  but also to be a pathetic and terminally stupid moron at the same time..

I don't know if it's intentional or not, but this relentless posting of utter bullshit, which the poster has shown he/she believes like religion, and never stops posting, makes me feel that I'm really just wasting my time digging up proof and counter-arguments.

So just let it go; I say to myself -- "Ben, you can't fix everything. Some people just won't open their minds to consider a dissenting point of view. Let it go -- you always do this, you try to correct people's false assertions with the best of intentions but you only make it worse, and that can be chalked up to your sickeningly naive insistence that people can rise above petty tribalism and be affected by reason -- well, guess what, pal, sorry to break it to you, but Rousseau was wrong, and by the way, you're 41 and your mother is still waiting for a grandchild, what the fuck are you doing spending all this time online when you could be making an actual human being? Or at least getting out in the sun and getting yourself some fucking Vitamin D instead of having to take it in pill form like your endocrinologist says you should. Who knows, you might actually fuck up and have some fun by accident. I mean, it's not like the ladies aren't lining up around the block for the chance to make a member of the next generation of homo sapien sapiens with you! Okay, okay, we're drifting into dishonesty again, and truth be told, there are some who might be interested but you just don't really feel the spark, and being raised by a pair of alcohol abusers who fought all the time doesn't really predisposition you to viewing married life as a goal to shoot for -- and yes, all the talk about how you don't necessarily have to repeat the pattern of dysfunction your parents taught you at the tender age of three doesn't make it all better, but still, you could try to push those doubts aside and go ahead and at least fulfill the purpose biology has for you, regardless of whether you intend to experience it ironically and wonder privately whether that purpose really even deserves to be fulfilled, given its probable impact on the habitability of the rest of the planet for life forms that can't really defend themselves against the beautiful, demonic cleverness that caused not just you but your entire species to profligate like a fucking virus, except that a virus either lives or dies, while you people rely on a veritable suite of medicines and technologies to ensure that even the weakest of you survive, which is something I'm sure the infant or feeble gazelles would love to have, but oh no, they don't get intelligence so they get mowed down by Mr. Lion, how the fuck is that fair, and that seemed horrible to you as a kid but only because you were raised in this unnatural culture that views death as something that must be fought, as though it's not as inevitable as the sunrise, and why? Because you're special. You are special. You're so fucking special."

Pure poetry. The ironic juxtaposition of the sharp teeth of a weasel with the toothless grub? If that didn't move you, you must be a Philistine. That there's avant garde poetry, that is.

Idea

EVERY SINGLE OPINION that you have ever written on this subject is a lie...

WHY ???

SIMPLY because you are a natural-born liar, cherrypicking bits and pieces from facts and fallacies to try and fit your own idiotic agendas.. You wouldn't recognise the "truth" if you fell over it.

EVERY pseudo-scientific "fact" and every populist denialist fallacy that you spout on here, and every time you deny the true and untainted facts as presented by veya, Ben, Victor and myself at any point, only goes to prove to anyone with any science at all in their background, just what a pathetic and pointless little nothingness you really are, Tommy..

INDEED, I have more scientific understanding in my little toe alone, than you will ever experience in your entire miserable and empty life, Mr. Monk... Arrow

You've a real unique way of laying 1 single item out here and saying - "there - refute that"...when 'THAT' is very much part of the entire way that mother nature has of erasing those islands as the oceans level continues to rise.
And to top it off, you supplied a 'cut & paste' from a single source that is considered by all valid oceanographers & biologist worth their salt as just pure JUNK paper...
If this 'Global Warming' issues {pro or con} is of interest to you; why the hell aren't you reading every thing you can get your hands on and bringing that in here --- CURRENT data too?
Like, staying up todate with the way that the glaciers are rapidly melting in Greenland - it's not like those of us enjoy watching that section of our globe rapidly disappear and the impact that it's having on the region is both immediate and shocking.
While your point {weak and regurgitated talking points} that the ice melt happens every _________ the occurrence has never been measured deeply within the glacier as we are now able to do - deep hole core drilling.

Rising sea levels mean five Solomon Islands now underwater 670398main_greenland_2012194-673

http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/greenland-melt.html
The melting spread quickly. Melt maps derived from the three satellites showed that on July 8, about 40 percent of the ice sheet's surface had melted. By July 12, 97 percent had melted.
This extreme melt event coincided with an unusually strong ridge of warm air, or a heat dome, over Greenland. The ridge was one of a series that has dominated Greenland's weather since the end of May. "Each successive ridge has been stronger than the previous one," said Mote. This latest heat dome started to move over Greenland on July 8, and then parked itself over the ice sheet about three days later. By July 16, it had begun to dissipate.
Even the area around Summit Station in central Greenland, which at 2 miles above sea level is near the highest point of the ice sheet, showed signs of melting. Such pronounced melting at Summit and across the ice sheet has not occurred since 1889, according to ice cores analyzed by Kaitlin Keegan at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather station at Summit confirmed air temperatures hovered above or within a degree of freezing for several hours July 11-12.
"Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time," says Lora Koenig, a Goddard glaciologist and a member of the research team analyzing the satellite data. "But if we continue to observe melting events like this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome."
Nghiem's finding while analyzing Oceansat-2 data was the kind of benefit that NASA and ISRO had hoped to stimulate when they signed an agreement in March 2012 to cooperate on Oceansat-2 by sharing data.

And while our NASA satellites provide us with a wonderful heavenly view from up above the boots on the ground - researchers have found that the sublayers of ice sheets melting from underneath due to the ocean temperature increase has been giving us a FALSE SENSE of deep ice when it's layered with vast open air pockets and pools of water that heat and expand as the sun warms these areas.
The stability of Greenland and parts of Antarctica are the two largest considerations when it comes to projecting rising sea levels, and the melting of the northeast glaciers are occurring at a  faster rate than previously expected. Researchers from Denmark, the Netherlands, the U.S., and China used data from aircraft, satellites, and digital photos, sequenced from 1976 to the present, to take thickness measurements. The results showed that the Northeast glaciers were retreating at a rate similar to a glacier in the southwest known as the Jakobshavn glacier, now known as the fastest in Greenland or Antarctica. In the summer of 2012 the recorded speed of that glacier reached 46 meters a day, four times what is was in 1990.
The topography of Greenland slopes upwards toward the center and radially downward toward the peripheral coasts, This means that the ice streams and masses that coastal glaciers hold back have the potential to fall into the sea in progressively larger sections spurred on by the force of gravity,  further accelerating the rise in sea levels. The bases of these coastal glaciers, then, with their bases extending down into the sea bed, serve as brakes this potential force.
Sea levels have risen 8 inches since 1900 and are expected to rise another three feet by 2100. Greenland alone accounts for six percent of this activity. Since the 1960s air temperatures across the arctic rose 3.6 Fahrenheit, twice that of areas further toward the equator. This has warmed arctic sea water temperatures in which the bases of coastal glaciers rest. And the Northeast glaciers of Greenland, once seen as a stronghold, are now melting; and quickly.
By Robert Wisnewski
http://guardianlv.com/2014/03/greenland-glaciers-melting-in-the-northeast/
And the most recent National Geographic article about Greenland; described what those glacial ice sheets really looked like, once the researchers attempted to trek across them --- what once was described as a solid ice packed glacier with some chasms of cracks and breaks - has now become something similar to Swiss cheese and false topped thin layers of unstable ice that can't be trusted and makes the journey that more hazardous to work on.
That's what boots on the ground research provides while the NASA satellites gives us the area mass shrinkage the ground crew knows what the true nature of that 'false façade' is looking like when trying to work on it.

All of this global warming right up there near the hole in our OZONE and it's a connection --- rather you want to see it or you chose to ignore it or you want to hide your little head in the sand to keep from hearing it; shit is come'n down man!

BTW --- FFS, do try to find better reading material then this junk crap >

After reading all the posts about rising sea levels affecting these islands did no one Google it?

I read that apart from rising sea levels the action of the waves on the coast lines reduces the height of coastal protection witch allows the sea to encroach further inland.

Use any search engine of choice; but as diverse as the entire global climate change issue and the escalation of events...trying to use one single trash publication {tommy's source} is lame/weak and just BS.
While he has singular point about soil erosion Rolling Eyes  ...why didn't that consistent tidal activity under cut those islands long before now '?'---because the oceans weren't rising in such a rapid pace and the surface area was rebuilt with the occasional hurricane surge in that region.

Nothing is going to save an any island from the ocean over taking it...the cost to ship barge loads of rock/sand/fill dirt is jut cost prohibitive.

Yes nicko... and the ones affected are on the outer edge of islands and exposed most to the sea waves!

Also there have been numerous earthquakes in surrounding area and small tsunamis washing in!

Many of these islands rise and fall naturally over time too.

Rain also washes outwards from islands as it falls and drains away.

YOU HAVE JUST proven yet again why you are so widely considered the most ignorant nong on this site....

HAVEN'T you learnt by now that anyone who falls back on "internet research" as their only reference, has already lost the argument before they even start ?!?

AS FOR your continuous claims that your supposed "evidence", so plainly c&p'd from climate denialist websites, is somehow "completely true!!!"  --  all that you are doing there, is further exposing the lack of any science, or even comprehension, in your what passes for your obviously weak and sadly unfinished education..

I don't think he's ignorant. He's pretty clever - he gets you going every time. Cool

Where do you do your research? At the bottom of a pint glass? Laughing

And since I posted that last comment at 8:05 am {my time} and you TROLLED in here at 8:12am...that means you are what I've clearly been stating for ever; nothing more then part of the 'HYENA PACK' that just drops in when you smell blood in the air!

What a shame that you waste your brain matter in such a lame way...now did you have any brilliant rejoinder to the topic at all or was this the best that your mental dribble could produce today Evil or Very Mad

See, the proof of Global Warming is all around us - on every section of this entire planet and the oceans as well; whether it's a million year cycle or something that our f'd up way of opening up the hole in our OZONE has escalated and now we've created the Pandora's Box for climate change Rolling Eyes
Melting of Totten Glacier Could Cause Sea Levels to Rise by At Least 6 Feet
Rising sea levels mean five Solomon Islands now underwater Melting-of-Totten-Glacier-Could-Cause-Sea-Levels-to-Rise-by-At-Least-6-Feet-825x510
Researchers at Imperial College London and institutions in Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. said the glacier is more unstable than previously thought and could cause levels to rise up to 13 feet.
A massive glacier melting into the Antarctic Ocean could raise sea levels by nearly three metres, scientists believe.
A study predicts that unless the current rate of climate change is reduced, the Totten Glacier could cross a point of no return within the next century.
This would lead to it retreating inland by up to 300 kilometres (186.4 miles), releasing vast amounts of water.
Global sea levels could rise by as much as 2.9 metres as a result, it is claimed – although the whole process might take several hundred years.
Professor Martin Siegert, co-director of the Grantham Institute at Imperial College London, said: “The evidence coming together is painting a picture of East Antarctica being much more vulnerable to a warming environment than we thought.
“This is something we should worry about.
“Totten Glacier is losing ice now, and the warm ocean water that is causing this loss has the potential to also push the glacier back to an unstable place.
“Totten Glacier is only one outlet for the ice of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, but it could have a huge impact.
“The East Antarctic Ice Sheet is by far the largest mass of ice on Earth, so any small changes have a big influence globally.”
The Antarctic Ice Sheet covers a land area of almost 5.4 million square miles at the South Pole and contains about 61% of all the fresh water on Earth.
It is divided into two western and eastern sections by a range of mountains.
The Eastern Antarctic Ice Sheet is currently thought to be relatively stable compared with the much smaller West Antarctic Ice Sheet.
But Totten Glacier is bucking the trend by losing substantial amounts of ice.
The new study published in the journal Nature found that if the glacier withdraws another 100-150km (62-93 miles), its front will be sitting on an unstable bed.
This could trigger a period of rapid retreat, the study says.

I know that I don't know all of the finite science that goes into calculating the rapid glacier ice melting in these arctic regions - I do know what the work force on the North Slope has had to change their work schedules for the past 5 years - what my friends in Anchorage have been saying about their warmer winters for the past 5 years and what the El Nino and La Nina wind currents are doing from the oceans warming...
Rising sea levels mean five Solomon Islands now underwater La-nina-vs-el-nino
But I won't buy into the idiotic rhetoric - 'this is muchadoabout nothing' when there is evidence all around the world that there is Global Warming/Climate Changes happening and the foot print from MAN KIND is just escalating the impact faster then anyone accounted for. Evil or Very Mad

lol!

And 4ever... I've never denied that global temperatures fluctuate.

It is quite normal.
