The beauty of freedom of movement

Post by Ben Reilly on Fri May 06, 2016 9:15 pm

Many people have dreams of dropping everything and traveling the world, but not everyone has the courage to let go of the familiar job, home and routine to go bravely into the unknown. But for Mike Hudson of England, the opportunity to travel and experience those "once in a lifetime" moments was too great. So in late 2013, he quit his job, sold or gave away most of his possessions, moved back into his parents' home temporarily, while he worked on converting an old van he bought on eBay into a small mobile living space that he could occupy full-time, while traveling Europe.

It took Hudson five months to refurbish the van from a junked state into something livable. Documenting his journey on his blog Vandog Traveller, he's since been through Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, Hungary, Romania and more, plus several music festivals and even spent Christmas with his family on the beach when they travelled to Athens, Greece to meet up with him. As of January 2015, he's still on the road, hoping to travel to Morocco in the future.

Pretty cool he's been able to do this without a passport, applying for visas, etc. Why would anyone tell him he can't?

Brilliant.   Spent 6 months travelling with a caravan, best time ever.   That look awesome.

One of the many things I dream of is sitting like that, by a van, under the stars with a joint and a cold something.

What I can never decide upon.... what would I be listening to music-wise? So many evocative songs to choose from.....

of course, no doubt, in every country he passes through he demands...and gets given...1000's pound of benefits for the duration he's there

just like those who. excercising their freedom of movement do in this country.... Rolling Eyes

Fucking hell. Are you one of those people who tell people that rainbows aren't really sky paintings but a series of bendy light optical illusion things??

Okay I admit I don't know what a rainbow really is, but I prefer to think a really pretty couple of lovebirds painted it.

Hmmmm Ben I certainly like the sentiment of the song but I'm thinking something more.....deep and slower and "gritty"?

Sassy, can't listen to Enya. She's a bit repetitive for me

I have to find the perfect song. I've though about this for many years now

Try this one on for size -- one of my favorites:

Not really gritty, but definitely deep Smile

Sound is a wave, like a wave on the ocean
Moon plays the ocean like a violin
Pushing and pulling from shore to shore
Biggest melody you never heard before

If I were the night sky
Here’s my lullaby Lullaby to leave by
If I were the night

What if we hadn’t been born at the same time?
What if you’re seventy five and I were nine?
Would I come visit you? Bring you cookies in an old folks home?
Would you be there alone?
And when the late summer lightning
Fires off in your arms
Will I remember to breathe?
No, I never will, no
And the fire could convince you that I mean you no harm
Just wanna show you how not to need

If I were the night sky
Here’s my lullaby Lullaby to leave by
If I were the night

What if we hadn’t been each other at the same time?
Would you tell me all the stories
From when you were young and in your prime?
Would I rock you to sleep?
Would you tell me all the secrets you don’t need to keep?
Would I still miss you?
Oh, would you then Have been mine?
Sound is a wave, like a wave on the ocean
Moon plays the ocean like a violin
Pushing and pulling from shore to shore
Biggest melody you never heard before

If I were the night sky
Here’s my lullaby
Lullaby to leave by
If I were the night.

Yeah I like that. Very triply at the end and mellow.
I don't come across many people who like ELO, I think they're really underrated.
Got me on it now....going to have to try to find something cos we are going to need a whole album!

Well, he must earn money along the way to feed himself and so what if it's a way of life.   We worked the markets to feed ourselves.  It was freedom.  You want everyone in a box and packaged?

I like that story. This is why it's important not to collect too much "stuff", so you can just go off travelling if you feel like it. Laughing
