PNG to close one of Australia's two overseas refugee detention centers

Post by *THE Ben Reilly* on Wed Apr 27, 2016 9:53 pm

The Manus Island immigration detention will close, and Australia must make new arrangements for the 850 asylum seeker and refugee men held there, the PNG prime minister, Peter O’Neill, has announced.

O’Neill’s announcement follows a ruling by the PNG supreme court on Tuesday that the detention of asylum seekers and refugees was illegal and unconstitutional, and it ordered the governments of Australia and PNG to immediately move to end the practise.

“Respecting this ruling, Papua New Guinea will immediately ask the Australian government to make alternative arrangements for the asylum seekers currently held at the regional processing centre,” O’Neill said.

“As I stated recently at the at the Australian Press Club, we did not anticipate the asylum seekers to be kept as long as they have at the Manus centre.”

The Manus Island facility is one of two in Australia’s offshore immigration processing regime. Both it and the one on the Pacific Island nation of Nauru, have been hugely controversial and highly criticised by the international community and human rights organisations. The Australian government provides funding and aid to the governments of PNG and Nauru to operate the centres, which house refugees and asylum seekers who arrived in Australia, or surrounding waters, by boat.

In 2012, when Sri Lanka’s human rights record was reviewed by the UN, the Australian government told the Sri Lankan government to eliminate all cases of abuse, torture and mistreatment by police and security forces. Two years later, we are directly returning asylum seekers to those forces.

While most refugees from Sri Lanka are Tamils, it is a mistake to think that people belonging to the Sinhalese majority are not at risk of harm. Any critic of the government – be they journalists, human rights defenders, lawyers or opposition politicians – face serious threats to their life and personal security, including abduction, torture and enforced disappearance and death.

If they're not from Sri Lanka, they're from Afghanistan and have just as much a right to seek asylum as anybody.

There is no law stipulating that people must choose a nearby country in which to seek asylum.

I've been to Sri Lanka... beautiful part of the world... lovely people... 21million of them seem to be living there safely enough... plenty of safe places for everyone there... and plenty more safe places in nearby surrounding areas/countries too...!!!

Afghanistan is even further away from australia... is also full of safe places... also surrounded by many nearby safe places... and any coming from Afghanistan would have to travel past/through sri lanka and all the other safe places on route to Australia too!!!

Overehelming vast majority are economic migrants!!!

They have left safety... travelled through numerous other places of safety... bypassing numerous other nearer places of safety... heading towards a place much much further away... seemingly having plenty of money to pay their way to get there too so hardly destitute by any stretch of the imagination... so clearly abusing asylum rules just for their own opportunistic chance of gain!!!

Either people start seeing sense... or you are basically saying that none of the Indian sub continent or SE Asia are safe... and up to 2 billion people from the areas could then also have reason to start to try to turn up in Australia with claims of needing somewhere safe to live...!!!
