Oh dear, such memories. Tea strainer? Yep, I've still got one in the kitchen drawer.

Bath water was heated up in a gas copper (boiler) in the kitchen, then we had to carry the hot water upstairs in buckets. Mother used to wash the clothes in the boiler and used a mangle to squeeze out the water. Wash day was always a Monday, and we always had fish on a Friday. An old Christian habit I believe.

Ah such memories, I had to wear short trousers until I left junior school.

We had bath day twice a week; Wednesday right after school & chores --- wet rag scrub down {all those necessary body parts} while standing in a round galvanized tub to soak some of the crude off of our bare feet. Wednesday was a mid week church night...we had to put our Sunday best on and shoes too. Saturday was the big water usage day ...laundry first and then those soapy water tubs were used for groups of siblings baths---starting with the oldest ones and working the way down to us younger ones! The older sisters helped with the scrubbing while my two older brothers helped with the water buckets...mom hung out the wet clothes on those long wires my littlest sister was in charge of the clothes pins and I had the fire wood detail for our outside cook stove! I hated doing all that in winter~~~
Fish every Friday, because of the Catholics in our large family; we weren't but my mother was raised in the Catholic faith and kept that meal plan going. Suspect

Hi Aspca. Our clothes were hung out on the line to dry, but if it was a wet day a fire was lit in the sitting room and clothes hung on a clothes horse in front of the fire to dry.

People these days don't realise how lucky they are with all the modern conveniences and gadgets.

Oh yes, Storme, toasting our bread at the fire. As for the poor old Frogs, we knew about it but never did it.

Climbing trees. Forgive my boasting but I was the best tree climber in the village. Tarzan was my hero and I suppose I was copying him. Lol, no I didn't swing from tree to tree. OUCH!

My childhood was basically this -- Hardy Boys books. Sandlot baseball. Atari 2600 video games (and text adventures on my friend's Tandy computer). Dungeons and Dragons. Camping out in the back yard. Exploring the dry river bed.

Riding bikes down the side of the dry river bed. Hitting big rocks while flying on bikes down the side of the dry river bed, flipping over the handlebars and rolling to the bottom. Hiding the wounds from Mom. Smile

Building "forts" out of scrap wood in vacant lots. Trying to find another group of kids to be our enemies so we could attack their fort and defend our own.

Skateboarding downhill at breakneck speed. Street football. Wall-ball:

Backcombing hair so your head looked totally out of proportion to the rest of you.
If a girls hair was thin they used to roll up a stocking and put it under the hair, then cover it to give height.

Which reminds me...we wore stockings and suspenders instead of tights, and if the button in the suspenders broke off a three penny bit could be used instead.

Us geezuz did not swear in front of the girlz, if it did slip out other geezuz would tell you to apologise.

Swearing definitely wasn't used so much in everyday language...not by either sex.
I think films and TV have made that acceptable, I remember when the F word wasn't allowed on TV at all.

Behaviour has definitely changed, but there are still plenty of respectable girls around. I think the brash gobby ones are just more noticeable.

Going out for hours in the summer and your mum never known where you were, who you were with and despite not having a watch, you'd still go home for lunch then dinner.

Oh and spending all day over at the lido, with sandwiches and a big bottle of drink and going as brown as a nut.

What about Cry Baby Johnny Ray, Louis Armstrong, Frankie Vaughen, Millie in Jamaica. Songs you could remember, sing and whistle, unlike today's rubbish, all they do is mumble just two or three notes until they're half way through, then they start shouting and screaming the same couple of notes. Ghastly!

i still have a load of old records, some 45s, some 78s and LPs. Been looking for a record collector to flog 'em to. Know anyone?

Cool

I HAVE over a hundred vinyl LPs and a couple of dozen 45s in a couple of plastic crates here...

JUST waiting for the day that I get around to buying a decent turntable..

Black and white telly, no coloured ones in those days. Going to the corner shop for sweets etc, when it was owned by a local man. The local baker coming round every evening with his van selling bread etc.

Dad telling us to be quiet when the news was on the radio. Clipped ear if noisy.

Farmers leaving produce by the side of the road, you picked what you wanted and put the money in the jam jar provided.

geek

YOU can still find stalls like that on some rural backroads down here -- once you get far enough out of town...

Pumpkins and marrows, watermelons, potatoes, sweet corn, apples, citrus fruits, bananas, mangoes, avocadoes, as well as bagged up chook, horse and cow manure, maybe some honey..

EXCEPT these days the money is often deposited into a slot in a locked box, with a small amount of change left in the jar.
