if you have win7 don't upgrade
If you have one of the win 8 then upgrade

it is good but there is still a number of new 'features' that bring it more in line with apple and android and therefore suck balls completely!!! and are not features for your benefit so much as malware to purposely invade your privacy and sell your details and basically a whole bunch of other crap which is why we should all switch to Linux

yeah but everything else, for people that want to be sold as a commodity to advertisers

and didn't see you sticking with win10

I don't use Linux but must admit i am considering it due to the fact that windows is trying to replicate all the bits of apple that are the exact reasons i hate and don't use apple products. If they want to make a product that is literally for Apple users that's their choice but I Am not an apple user so will not buy it or use it even if it is sold under the name win10

Yes. Even as a part of their agreement, you have to agree that your computer will periodically send to MS status messages and content, and you are all right with that.

I've used Ubuntu before, I think it's awesome. It's my first recommendation for extending the life of an older computer that's running slow.

I'd be using it except that I can't figure out how to access my company intranet with it. Maybe I need to grab a cheap laptop from somewhere, install Ubuntu and just tinker with it until I've figured it out.

emulators you can do anything with emulators
but like KD said a bit of a pain in the ass to set up.

Not sure (haven't checked) but if you can get a Android emulator to run chrome i think you'd be right for the majority of intranets scratch

Suspect

JUST need to look for any possible cross-ownership connections between the 'big players', such as Microsoft, Google, Apple, Intel, IBM, Lenarvo, Facebook, Amazon...

Microsoft and Apple are now among the largest corporations in the world -- each is bigger than Exxon, Toyota, Volkswagen, GE, GM..

the easiest upgrade of an operating system ever. all my old programs worked without any need to reinstall.
Loads faster than windows 7 and very configurable.
If you dont like it you can roll back to windows 7 within 30 days.

Very configurable so you don't need all the ms snoopery.
if you have windows 8/8.1 then a definite must to upgrade, 7 not so much, but probably worth it in the long run.

And of course for the time being it is free.

I don't have a problem with MS getting crash data if it happens. I guess those with more to hide might feel a little paranoid

Windows 10 Home will be forced to download automatic updates. It doesn't stop there either. The basic offering of Windows 10 also controls how much bandwidth a user consumes, display ads in the Start Menu, log every key press on the keyboard, download a user's browser history, and much more. These are all described in the End User License Agreement (EULA) each user is required to agree to before making use of the operating system (if the user even bothers to thoroughly read through it).

Turkey cracks down on Twitter and Facebook after deadly car bombing
By Efe Kerem Sozeri Feb 18, 2016, 10:15am CT

After Wednesday’s deadly car bomb attack in Turkey’s capital city of Ankara, the Turkish government responded quickly—by issuing issued a gag order on TV broadcasts and reportedly throttling access to social media.

The attack, which targeted service busses carrying military personnel, claimed 28 lives while 61 people are being treated at various hospitals, Turkish media has reported.

Turkey has recently been a hotbed of terrorism, with at least seven deadly attacks on Turkish soil since 2015. In response, the country’s government has developed a pattern of media bans and censorship of social media, according to media culture academics.

This time, the temporary gag order, which covers “live broadcasts showing the place of blast, the moment and immediate aftermath of the blast and dead bodies,” was issued minutes after the explosion and caused concerns for self-censorship in the mainstream media.

The throttling of social media also suggests a “rapid response system,” according to censorship researchers. Within an hour after the blast, TTNET, Turkey’s largest ISP, started slowing down access to Twitter.

The the second hour, other ISPs also joined in the organised attempt to throttle social media.

As the Daily Dot previously reported in July, Turkey has employed semi-legal means to extend temporary broadcast bans into blanket censorship of social media in the aftermath of political scandals and reports of government incompetence. While the legal action to ban online content may still take at least a full day, government orders can be put into force within hours.

The Turkish government’s current limit on social media reportedly has no public court ruling or decision available; hence the use of an administrative order. Yet, as the researchers of censorship trackers @TurkeyBlocks note throttling access to social media, instead of fully blocking it, evades ordinary censorship monitoring systems while causing less public outcry.

As of this writing, journalists in Turkey still report that access to Twitter is slowed down and they cannot post updates without employing a VPN service.

SO THEN,  whatever happened to Windows 9  ?!?

WAS it really such a dog, that MS was too embarrassed to even consider releasing it..

AS for web browsers, I have Safari, Firefox and Chrome on my compootah, so when one is playing up (usually, but not always, after an upgrade..) I try one of the others (I also have Opera, but rarely use it..).
OFTEN it's only on certain kinds of sites where I run into problems (e.g. varies with different site hosts, such as forumation..).

THAT, of course, is when the internet is operating properly, which it hasn't been for some months around here !

@wolf
it is because many scripts have 'win9%' to detect the legacy OS of either win95 or win98

there is no windows 9 because Microsoft is a REAL technology company that’s primary market is still Business and the IT professionals that work for them.

Yeh, yeh, amd maybe someday MS will grow up to be nearly as big as Apple -- you know, that mob whose interfaces Miicrosoft keep trying to match...

What's that !  A computer company called 'Phil' ?  (I know, I know - that's not nice;  just thought I'd get in before Victor..).      Razz

My laptop has upgraded to Windows 10 in a most random manner - I didn't ask it to. Neutral

I'll see how it goes for a while.

I've done some research on this, and apparently, you can revert back. However, it seems W10 is only in a development phase and everyone being upgraded is part of its development. Windows can now see everything you do and harvests your information whether you like it or not. It will also automatically update your computer with no choice from you. It will disable Windows Media and you'll no longer be able to play DVDs. Also, I believe there are ad pop ups to deal with. There seems to be too many cons than pros for it. It'll be interesting to see you get on.

I'm really not sure about it.

Doesn't sound too great!

I'll give it a go, and then get rid of it if I don't like it. I'm not sure why it upgraded. I'm always getting pop ups about it and I just close them. Maybe closing one triggered the update. Laughing

I've disabled the updates for Windows 10 on my pc.   I've got windows 8.1.   If you look at the bottom right corner you'll see the white windows icon...if you scroll over this is says update to Windows 10.  You can rid of this by doing this.

The update called KB3035583 slips through the net and installs if you aren't aware of it. In order to remove the KB3035583 update, navigate to your Windows Updates by searching for it in the search bar within your Start Menu, then click on 'View Update History'. From here you'll see a new window pop-up and you'll be able to see a link to 'Installed Updates'. Click on this hyperlink and it will open another tab with all your previously installed updates.
Give the window a few minutes to load (this might be longer depending on your computer's specifications), and at the top right-hand corner search for KB3035583.   There will be dozens of KB nos.  Put a search in the top right hand search pane for KB3035583, it'll then bring it up.  Right click on it and uninstall.

It may prompt you to restart.  Mine didn't.  But if it does,

Upon restarting the PC, go back into Windows Update and 'Check for updates', you should now be able to see KB3035583 as an optional or recommended/important update. Right click on the update and 'Hide update'

That little white windows icon should now have disappeared, so there's no risk of clicking on it by mistake.

Thanks Horatio. I'll have a look at that.

I had a problem with updates on another laptop - an older system. It completely crashed my computer, and I disabled them in the end.

I muddle through OK with Windows 10.
Sometimes the laptop seems to have a mind of it's own....which is obviously far superior to mine in techie matters.....but eventually it reverts back to what I hope it will do. scratch

I've actually now reverted back to the previous system, which was quite easy, via the settings menu. I don't seem to have lost any info either.

I must be the exception to the rule.  Downloaded it after much prompting as I knew I could get rid again, but I love it and had no problems at all.

I didn't really give it a chance, so I don't know if I would liked it. I just didn't ask for it (to my knowledge), so I object to suddenly upgrading.

Work upgraded my laptop. I'm learning its little idiosyncrasies.

My verdict - Meh. But huge improvement over the whatinthehellweretheythinking 8.
