Jeremy Corbyn - Working with Women

Post by sassy on Thu Aug 06, 2015 9:19 pm

Labour leadership contender Jeremy Corbyn has today released his Working with Women document, outlining proposals towards real gender equality.

Jeremy proposes bolder strategies to promote stronger equality between women and men including the moving towards a system of universal free childcare. He calls for an urgent end to the cuts to public services and welfare that drive more women and families into poverty, including the cuts to women’s refuges and services for domestic violence.

He argues that companies should publish mandatory equal pay audits as an essential step towards equal pay for equal work. Further, he holds that all those in work are given equal protection from discrimination from day one, with no employment tribunal fees to bar the poorest from accessing justice.

The Working With Women document outlines more investment in skills training and high quality apprenticeships, with an emphasis on challenging outdated stereotypes.

And, since gender discrimination doesn't end outside the office door, Jeremy also argues for the need to challenge everyday sexism by promoting Personal, Social Health and Economic (PSHE) education in schools, including sex and relationship education. He plans to proactively ensure that laws on sexual assault and protection from harassment are implemented, to ensure that women do not feel ashamed or belittled by reporting behaviour they find intimidating to the police.

If elected Labour leader, Jeremy commits to a 50% women shadow cabinet, and to work towards 50% of Labour MPs being women.

“Women face abuse, mistreatment and persistent discrimination, and they face it in work, at home and on our streets. Yet they disproportionately shoulder our unpaid care work, the daily grind of surviving on low pay, and the pain of cuts that have closed domestic violence shelters and left them with no safe haven," says Jeremy.

“The time for timid measures is over. Women deserve fair pay, fair chances and unflinching support in the face of violence and abuse. Today’s proposals would go a long way towards building a society where women and men exist as equals and flourish. "

Newly elected MP Kate Osamor is working closely with Jeremy to promote the equality agenda welcomes this policy initiative, said Kate:

"I’m so glad that Jeremy Corbyn has opened up a big discussion about the role women would play if he is elected leader of the Labour party – and setting some pointers of the kind of agenda for women we as a party would have. I’m delighted to be working with him on this.

"We can’t change the world everything overnight, but we can do much more together to achieve greater equality and opportunity for everyone.

"One of the main things that I like about Jeremy’s approach to his leadership bid is it’s not all about him – he knows that the model of the suited and booted media star leader is over.

"People are no longer interested. Instead Jeremy is about getting everyone together and working collectively. The days of waiting for policies to be passed down from a Westminster elite are over, or should be."

Yet backs terrorists.
So that is going to lose him many women votes, as many women are more conservative based off natural fears. A person that fails to denounce those who use fears, is not going to find vast amounts of women back him.
No surprise you back a terrorist sympathizer mind.
I more than anything want a united Ireland, one born not from violence, but love of a people. The IRA and unionist terrorist groups stand in the way of that. Those that fail to condemn them, fail to understand the Irish people at all.

Well yes, lets make sure equality is fair for all and make sure the refuge homes for battered men abused by their women are equally available and that adequate protection is in place to look after them. Smile

Wrong, Corbyn is very aware that women can stick up for themselves, but also aware they are, in many cases, denied the patform to do so.  He's prepared to give them that platform.

Good luck with that, there isn't enough provision for the women and children victims.

Will he be ensuring that woman do not have an advantage when it comes to divorce, child custody issues, and financial support? After all, he wants equality doesn't he?

Are you disputing that when it comes to child custody, things are weighted in a woman's favour? Are you disputing that when it comes to financial maintenance they will generally give women more than they would give a man, and for longer?

How about the law which says a person accused of rape can be named, but the alleged victim can't be? Is that not indirectly discriminating against men?

When it comes to child custody, if both parents are loved by the children and are well treated by both parents, then there should be joint custody.   It's not 'weighted in a woman's favour'.  Children on the whole want to be with the mother and visit the father, schooling has to be taken into account so that they are in once place during term time and there are a hell of a lot more fathers that abandon children than mothers, although it does happen.    If a woman has given up a career to look after children, and then has taken probably part time work when they are old enough, and they then divorce, yep the wife should get good maintenance.  The husband would not be in the position he is in without her taking care of the family and probably running around after him as well.  I also think that if it was the other way round and the husband had stayed at home because the wife could earn more, that should be treated exactly the same.
