Fun facts ripped off the Internet

* If you ever find yourself higher than 59,000 feet in the air moving faster than 1,200 mph, don't bother with your GPS -- it will likely have shut down by design to prevent itself from being used to guide an intercontinental ballistic missile.

* A 2009 episode of "Family Guy" referred to then-Bruce, now-Caitlyn Jenner as a woman and included a joke about a Bill Cosby sex scandal.

* The Shapley Supercluster is a cluster of galaxies so dense and massive that it doesn't expand with the rest of the universe and is pulling other galaxies, including the Milky Way, toward it.

* There is only one confirmed case of a person being hit by a meteor. She survived with just a bruise on her thigh.

* The 18 victims of the single largest mass lynching in U.S. history were Chinese-American residents of Los Angeles.

As a bit of a space nerd and being totally pedantic nobody has ever been hit by "meteor"or a meteoroid It is called a meteoroid before its impact

meteorite`s survives its impact with the Earth's surface or person in this case Smile

Banging your head against a wall burns 150 calories an hour.

In the UK, it is illegal to eat mince pies on Christmas Day!

Pteronophobia is the fear of being tickled by feathers.

When hippos are upset, their sweat turns red.

The average woman uses her height in lipstick every 5 years.

29th May is officially “Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day“.

Cherophobia is the fear of fun.

Human saliva has a boiling point three times that of regular water.

If you lift a kangaroo’s tail off the ground it can’t hop.

Hyphephilia are people who get aroused by touching fabrics.

Billy goats urinate on their own heads to smell more attractive to females.

The person who invented the Frisbee was cremated and made into frisbees after he died!

During your lifetime, you will produce enough saliva to fill two swimming pools.

An eagle can kill a young deer and fly away with it.

Polar bears can eat as many as 86 penguins in a single sitting.

A few more interesting ones:

* If you want to live in New Zealand, better shape up -- the government has rejected some residency visas for very obese people.

* A trio of Chernobyl workers exposed themselves to lethal doses of radiation to stop the meltdown, which might otherwise have affected large swaths of Europe. They died within two weeks.

* After hearing of the 9/11 attacks, the nomadic Maasai tribe of Kenya and Tanzania shipped 14 cows, which they value very highly, to the United States. (We won't forget.)

* Keith Moon and Cass Wilson died in the same room in Harry Nillson's London apartment, both at the age of 32.

* The British monarch is allowed to drive within the United Kingdom regardless of whether she/he has a license.

Correction -- the cows were given, but not shipped. Still an amazing gesture from a culture that gives cows as their ultimate act of friendship and kindness and who believe that gifted cows must never be slaughtered, but cared for until death as a way of honoring the gift.

The idea came from a Maasai tribesman who was educated in New York City and wanted to console the country in which he earned his degree.

eddie wrote:The person who invented the Frisbee was cremated and made into frisbees after he died.

The Frisbee wasn't invented; it was discovered and turned into a playful toy, originally taken from an inverted pie tin.

about.com inventers wrote:
The Pie Tin
The Frisbie Baking Company (1871-1958) of Bridgeport, Connecticut, made pies that were sold to many New England colleges. Hungry college students soon discovered that the empty pie tins could be tossed and caught, providing endless hours of game and sport. Many colleges have claimed to be the home of 'he who was first to fling.' Yale College has even argued that in 1820, a Yale undergraduate named Elihu Frisbie grabbed a passing collection tray from the chapel and flung it out into the campus, thereby becoming the true inventor of the Frisbie and winning glory for Yale. That tale is unlikely to be true since the words 'Frisbie's Pies' was embossed in all the original pie tins and from the word 'Frisbie' was coined the common name for the toy.

Plastic Frisbie
In 1948, a Los Angeles building inspector named Walter Frederick Morrison and his partner Warren Franscioni invented a plastic version of the Frisbie that could fly further and with better accuracy than a tin pie plate. Morrison's father was also an inventor, who invented the automotive sealed-beam headlight. Another interesting tidbit was that Morrison had just returned to America after World War II, where he had been a prisoner in the infamous Stalag 13. His partnership with Warren Franscioni, who was also a war veteran, ended before their product had achieved any real success.

Morrison (after his split with Franscioni) produced a plastic Frisbie called the Pluto Platter, to cash in on the growing popularity of UFOs with the American public. The Pluto Platter has become the basic design for all Frisbies. The outer third of the Frisbie disc is called the 'Morrison Slope', listed in the patent. Rich Knerr and A.K. 'Spud' Melin were the owners of a new toy company called 'Wham-O'. Knerr and Melin also marketed the Hula-Hoop, the Super Ball and the Water Wiggle. They pair first saw Morrison's Pluto Platter in late 1955. They liked what they saw and convinced Morrison to sell them the rights to his design. With a deal signed, Wham-O began production (1/13/1957) of more Pluto Platters. The next year, the original Frisbie Baking Company shut down and coincidentally Fred Morrison was awarded a patent (Design patent 183,626) for his flying disc. Morrison received over one million dollars in royalties for his invention.

The Name 'Frisbee'
The word 'Frisbee' is pronounced the same as the word 'Frisbie'. Rich Knerr (Wham-O) was in search of a catchy new name to help increase sales, after hearing about the original use of the terms 'Frisbie' and 'Frisbie-ing'. He borrowed from the two words to create the registered trademark Frisbee ®. Sales soared for the toy, due to Wham-O's clever marketing of Frisbee playing as a new sport. In 1964, the first professional model went on sale. Ed Headrick was the inventor at Wham-O who patented Wham-O's designs for the modern frisbee (U.S. patent 3,359,678). Ed Headrick's frisbee with its band of raised ridges called the Rings of Headrick had stablized flight as opposed to the wobbly flight of its predecessor the Pluto Platter.

Ultimate Frisbee
In 1967, high school students in Maplewood, New Jersey, invented Ultimate Frisbee, a recognized sport that is a cross between football, soccer and basketball. Ten years later, a form of Frisbee golf was introduced, complete with professional playing courses and associations.

Another Great Frisbee Moment: In 1968, the U.S. Navy spends almost $400,000 to study Frisbees in wind tunnels, following their flights with computers and cameras, and building a special Frisbee-launching machine on top of a Utah cliff to test a prototype flare launcher.

Today the fifty year old Frisbee® is owned by Mattel Toy Manufacturers, only one of at least sixty manufacturers of flying discs. Wham-O sold over one hundred million units before the selling the toy to Mattel.

Disc Golf
Ed Headrick, owner of the Disc Golf Association, Inc.® founded the game of Disc Golf in 1976. The sport is played by an estimated two million recreational players in the United States and increasing. Headrick's inventions include the Wham-O Superball that sold over twenty-million units and the utility patent for the modern day Frisbee, which has sold over two-hundred-million units to date. Mr. Headrick led the Advertising program, New Products program, was Vice President of Research and Development, Executive Vice President, General Manager and served as CEO for Wham-O Inc. over a ten year period. The patent drawing at the top of this article is from U.S. patent 3,359,678 - issued to Headrick on December 26, 1967.

Couple more:

* Igloos can warm up to a balmy 16 degrees (62 in Fahrenheit). It's kind of weird to think that an American cooler company named itself "Igloo" -- igloos keep things warm, not cold Smile By the way, they do this only with the power of human body heat. No fire required.

* The top 100 tallest mountains are all in the Himalaya; people who live there are particularly susceptible to blindness due to the higher concentration of solar UV rays.

* The global deserts are desolate, inhospitable places, which might explain why only 300 million people (almost the population of the U.S.) live in them Smile Mostly surviving on technology that dates back a millennium, at least.

The name 'Wendy' was invented by JM Barry who wrote Peter Pan.   Apparently, the small daughter of a friend, tried to call him 'my friendy' but she could only manage 'my wendy'.  So he used it in the book.

Here's a good one -- in 1962, the residents of Centralia, Pennsylvania started a trash fire in an abandoned strip coal mine. Unfortunately, and unbeknownst to town leaders, there was a vein of exposed coal accessible through a hole in one of the mine's walls.

The fire set the coal ablaze and it continues to burn to this very day. The temperature inside the mine exceeds 540 degrees Celsius, making it hotter than the daylit surface of the planet Mercury. The toxic gasses given off are similar in composition to the atmosphere of Saturn. It's estimated that there is enough remaining coal to fuel the Centralia fire well past the year 2250.

The state claimed eminent domain and the population dwindled from nearly 2,000 in 1950 to around 10 today, who have been granted the right to live the rest of their lives in Centralia. But nobody's allowed to move in.

"Texas, Our Texas" is the official Texas state song. It was written in 1924 by Gladys Wright of Fort Worth, Texas and William J. Marsh of ... Liverpool, England Smile

Most Texans actually prefer this song:

... which was first recorded by Perry Como of Pennsylvania at a Los Angeles recording studio.

The last recorded kill in action with an English longbow was in 1940, when Jack "Mad Jack" Churchill, who fought throughout the war with a longbow and a Scottish broadsword (and carried bagpipes into battle), killed a German NCO with a single arrow shot in the Battle of France.

The world's 2nd highest peak --  K2  --  is in the Karokorams in Pakistan,  not in the Himalaya...

Indeed, over 40 of the 100 highest peaks aren't actually in the Himalaya, but in the neighbouring Karakorams, Hindu Kush or the Eastern Pamirs..

(Even if some people may refer to that whole region as "the Himalayas", the locals might disagree --  probably a bit like telling Finland that it's part of 'Scandinavia', or calling Cypriots 'Italians'..).

I rather like these anagrams which are so spookily true, they are  exquisite.

William Shakespeare = I’ll make a wise phrase

The Morse code = Here come dots

Slot machines =  Cash lost in ‘em

Eleven plus two = Twelve plus one

Statue of Liberty = Built to stay free

Love 'em!!  fiesta
