Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the charismatic leftist who dominated his country with sweeping political change and flamboyant speeches, died Tuesday at age 58, after a long battle with cancer that was shrouded in mystery and prevented him from being inaugurated for a fourth term.

While I do believe he had a lot of good ideas and that his heart was in the right place on many issues, Chavez was bad on civil rights and even worse on democracy. But to paraphrase a quote from a recent Doctor Who episode: "It would be so much simpler if he was just one thing, wouldn't it?"
