Well thanks Osborne you miserable F....r! Now I have to persuade my grandson to go to Uni.

Post by sassy on Wed Jul 08, 2015 3:12 pm

This morning my grandson got the news that he has been accepted to his Uni of choice.  His Mum doesn't earn a lot and his Dad stopped paying maintenance for him the second he hit his 19th birthday (he's a year behind due to illness).  Because my daughter is on a low income he was due to get a maintenance grant while at Uni and the loan to cover his tuition fees.  Osborne has just announced that the maintenance grant is to be abolished next year and turned into a loan.   The tuition fees are £8,000 a year, so he was already looking to pay back £24,000 for a 3 year course.  The maintenance grant he will get this year is £8,000, but next year and the year after will be turned into a loan and will therefore add a debt of £16,000 to the £24,000 so he is looking to start his working life with a debt of £40,000 !!!!!!!!!!

His Mum and I say go, it will give you better prospects, he says, what the hell is the use of the prospects if I owe all that money?   I see his point.

I can't repeat what I would like to do to that smirking, self indulgent, coke addled bastard called Osborne.

My grandson must be one of many, many kids who will probably decide not to go to uni now.

We sink lower every bloody year.

Ok,while it was a travesty that fees ever rose in the first place, the repayment scheme is much better now than it was under Labour.

That is on the fees themselves though.

Have the Tories said what the repayment scheme will be like for the maintenance grant/loan? Is it like that of the fees or is it not so easy going?

From what I can gather they will be added together and treated the same Les.

I honestly don't know how to advise him.

I mean, it is wrong anyone should have such huge loans just to get an education and a certificate 'as proof' of that education.

BUT. It is a loan that wont be paid unless the graduate earns over £21,000, and even then the repayments start low. And they will be wiped after a certain period.

So sure the debt 'sounds' bad, but it isn't nearly as bad as at first sight. It is still more than worth going to university.

I'm sure you'll all find a way sassy, it would be a real shame for him to put out his fire before it's even started.

Btw, coke-addled Osborne? Tell me more!

Actually it's £17,500 now, although you only pay a bit at that salary.

http://www.studentloanrepayment.co.uk/portal/page?_pageid=93,6678490&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

I honestly don't think that is the main problem, it's simply the thought of having that amount of debt when you don't know what is going to happen in your life.

But in the worst case, you are out of work or whatever, you wont have to pay.

When did it drop to £17,500?

Not sure. His mum and I are going to do our damdest to get him to go, but as he's not the most self confident boy in the world although really talented, he's finding the thought daunting.

Maybe you should tell him to get a part time job while at UNI so as to help pay for his existence while there...

That is what he is going to do anyway, he couldn't live on the £8,000, as that has to include his rent, books, food, travel etc and his course requires lots of materials that he will have to buy.

Yeah the thought is scary but only on the surface, a quick check shows how one needn't be scared at all.

At £17,500 (based on your link) you repay £1 a month. Nothing really.

Even at £21,000 the repayment is easily manageable.

Just make sure he is aware of this and he'll see sense Smile

Good, luck to him. Let's hope he doesn't get put off! As les says, £1 a month (if that's correct) is doable.

That doesn't sound too bad
Sounds like here.

As long as he finishes and gets a career out of it it will be Ok, it is normal for gen Y onwards to start there professional lives with 10,000's in student debt now.

His would be about £50,000. My daughter is not talking about going to live in the city the uni is so he can live at home and not have a maintenance loan if the Church will transfer her. My other grandson would live with a friend here as he doesn't want to move. I said she should let him go, loads of others will be in the same position, and leaving home is all part of the experience. Ah well, they'll have to work it out between them. Thanks for all the advice folks, sometimes it helps to get your thoughts in order, listening to others.

Computer graphics and fine art, he is the most brilliant artist but is also really good at designing web games etc, it's just about the only uni that combines them, plus they have links to computer graphic companies and get places for them, so he was thrilled that he got into it.
