First topic message reminder :

The collective out pouring of support for gay marriage on social media has been both astonishing and heart warming over the past few days. I always knew that most people today had positive views on this subject- but wasn't quite aware just how much the tide really is now massively against those who cling to homophobia.

I used to hear, when I first joined Sky, how 'the militant homosexual agenda' would eventually result in a 'backlash' against the gay community- it doesn't seem to be happened- far from it, the opposite is the case.

I love western society for this for the most part. And look forward to many other places around the world following the precedent we have set on matters of equality  Smile

Meanwhile, here is some of the best of Facebook, just letting those against know the extent of just how far their backward views have fallen in the eyes of many...

Understandable compromise at the time. British Society wasn't ready to accept 'gay marriage' in 2005, but Labour wanted to make it as equal as they could.

This is funny to me, though. This fight has gone on for well over a century, really picking up steam in the past few decades. Now that it appears that the death blow has been delivered to the anti-gay agenda, the homophobes are saying, "Ah, this is boring."

Practically every time major social progress is made, regressives end up shrugging and asking everyone to stop talking about it now. OK, we'll just act like a really big deal didn't just happen. Oh wait, you guys don't get to dictate what the rest of us talk about, so I think we'll just keep talking about it if you don't mind -- or if you do.

Hahaha, exactly! Conservatives are against racism ... now. Against gender discrimination ... now. Believe mixed-race couples should be allowed to marry ... now. Smile

What's funny is to see so many people acting like the U.S. just now got marriage equality, whereas the majority of the country already had it (in some cases for over a decade) before the Supreme Court decision struck down the bans in the remaining states that still had them.

So there's already info about gay divorce -- they get divorced at a lower rate than straight couples: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/12/15/same-sex-divorce-rates-williams-_n_6328102.html

How is it typical?

A single gay news story- a massive change in the USA and for America I imagine American news is going to get priority over international (as in any country). Of course if the media thinks people want to hear it then that is consumerism, people get what they want, and they wanted to hear this- says a lot don't you think Smile

That's right, was it 14 states that remained without it?

Great stat there too! I guess some straight couples may get married out of expectations or because they want a family and then realize it wont work (and minority of course).

Gay people don't have that expectation so we can be sure before hand.

Just some thoughts.

Well exactly!

Most of the people acting that way are opposed to marriage equality, though. Those of us who aren't are celebrating the fact that gay marriage bans are now illegal according to the U.S. constitution.

That's true, it was just 14 states and with a few exceptions, they weren't very well populated states. Most Americans already lived in states with marriage equality. But now it's federally illegal for states to bar gay couples from marrying -- i.e. no state will ever be able to do that again.

Just as some straight couples do. Being married in the U.S. carries a lot of legal advantages.

Patrick Stuebing and his wife, Susan Karolewski, live in the German city of Leipzig. Patrick’s a locksmith and Susan dotes over their four kids. Patrick and Susan also happen to be brother and sister.

Their case has sparked heated debate in Germany for over a decade. Stuebing has already been convicted three times of incest and has served almost three years in prison. In the latest twist, an influential committee is recommending that incest be legalized. The German Ethics Council argues that genetic risks to a child from an incestuous relationship are not significant enough to justify the law.

Just as some straight couples do. Being married in the U.S. carries a lot of legal advantages.

I mean some might get married in the excitement about the law changing.

A few might, but try to remember that just because they're gay doesn't make them any more likely to rush into a lifelong commitment that they haven't thought over. Divorce is still difficult for people, and that even includes gay people, believe it or not.

It's interesting, but most gay people make their life decisions very similarly to how straight people make them -- in other words, they haven't subsumed their own personal desires and goals and decided instead to sacrifice their individuality in favor of fighting for the cause of gay rights.

So the vast majority of them who, for example, ask someone to make them a wedding cake really do just want a nice cake for their wedding, and really aren't out to destroy some poor innocent Christian bakers' life.

True that, and I'd say we make decision exactly as straight people do- only we have to remember to book a twin room instead of a double if we decide to travel in the Middle East lol!

Well a lot of heterosexual people don't seem to think it through before they get married, so I don't see why gay people should be any different.

I just said that the divorce rates will probably be similar - it's too soon to say really.

It wasn't a wedding cake by the way. Anyway, there's no reason why wedding cakes shouldn't just be wedding cakes rather than a political statement.

So much resentment...

In fact in America it is NOT over.

Adoption rights aren't perfect I believe
(correct me if I'm wrong American friends), and in some states you can still be discriminated against in employment and some businesses just for being gay- so a way to go there.

Homophobia of course remains a problem in both our countries, though on very different levels.

There we have it... the homoNazis want to get their hands on the children!

Adoption is not a 'right' that you can claim by making out you are a victim of discrimination.

A child's rights and needs are paramount.

And a child should only be placed in a normal and natural environment with a mother and a father.

And here we have EXACTLY the reason any clear thinking person MUST continue to help our gay friends in tghier fight for true equality...

bigoted and quite frankly stupid ideas like this need to be erased from the concience of man
such Ideas are NO better than the dicarded and disgusting ideas of "racial purity" etc espoused not so many years ago by an insane little painter ....
they have NO basis in any form of fact, merely having roots in the sub standard mind of a biased and cruel individual.
considering the rhetoric of that nasty litlle painter....those who continue to "keep faith" with such mentally aberant ideas could be considered todays "untermench"

not only are they merely out of touch, but regressive, viscious and mena minded.

I will ask Tommy the same question that I asked HF and VOD...(and noticeably got no answer)....What harm Tommy, physical OR psychological can a gay person attaining the same rights as the rest of us do YOU

never mind the waffle and "ah buts".....

Adoption is not a right and the child's needs are paramount.

I think Tommy is actually incredibly in touch with how children think, particularly pre-verbal ones.
